The HyTea-team visited the 17th EATEL Summer School on Technology-Enhanced Learning (JTELSS 2023) in La Manga, Spain. This summer school provided great opportunities to connect with other researchers as well as to present the own research. The HyTea-Team was involved in multiple workshops and also presented posters.
Workshop: “We can’t stop communicating – AI can help us to use this data for education”
Nina Mouhammad and Stefan Hummel conducted the workshop “We can’t stop communicating – AI can help us to use this data for education.” The workshop emphasized the importance of incorporating both verbal and nonverbal communication signals in technology-enhanced learning applications. Various examples highlighting successful implementations were discussed.
The participants were divided into two groups to explore nonverbal and verbal communication, respectively. After engaging discussions, interactions and also prototype testing, the groups swapped to gain insights from both perspectives.
To conclude the workshop on a creative note, participants formed small groups and designed either the worst presentation skills training app imaginable or a product box for a presentation skills training robot. This exercise sparked laughter while at the same time providing valuable insights into relevant features for such applications.
Workshop: “From Fun to Fundamentals: Exploring Serious Educational Games and the Potential of AI”
In their workshop titled “From Fun to Fundamentals: Exploring Serious Educational Games and the Potential of AI,” Melina Rose and Roland Klemke introduced participants to the world of serious games, gamification, and their distinctions. Engaging examples brought these concepts to life.
The workshop’s highlight was a group activity where participants designed a game to teach 4th graders about AI. The catch? Each participant had to assume a character role during the group work, and the final presentation had to be in rhyme! The groups showcased remarkable creativity, presenting their game designs in an entertaining and thought-provoking manner.
With this, the workshop successfully demonstrated the potential of serious educational games and AI in enhancing learning experiences.
Poster Session
The HyTea-team actively participated in the captivating poster session, which turned out to be an engaging platform for insightful discussions. The session extended well beyond expectations, lasting over three hours. The valuable feedback, inspirations, and exchanges during the session served as invaluable resources, propelling the HyTea project forward.
The HyTea thanks the organizers of JTELSS for providing an exceptional event that fostered knowledge sharing, collaboration, and inspiration!
